Insulation and sound proofing

Lots of stuff written about this on the web. Personally I'm not convinced, but decided to do it anyway!
The back of the van was completely stripped out. The exposed panels were covered with strips of flashband,

 then with theramawrap

any gaps, pillars & door panels were filled with recycled plastic bottle insulation

 and finally stretchy carpet.

The idea is that the flashband deadens the tendency for the sheet metal panels to resonate. The original hardboard door panels were covered in the stretchy carpet. The rear windows were tinted using Suntek film. Not the easiest job in the world - but it does give privacy and will help to keep the van cooler on sunny days.
The plywood on the lowered floor was rotten so has be removed and a little filler/rust proofing/paint added to the rear tailgate. The lowered floor was then covered with rubber matting.

  1. I'm about to undertake the same task on the same van, how easy was it to carpet the rear quarters all in one go like that? Any tips?

    1. It's not quite in one go. On the right hand side it's actually 3 pieces. One piece towards the front of the van, covering the side panel up to the window, and half of the wheel arch. Second piece towards the back covering the side panel and the back half of the wheel arch. Third piece towards the back, covering the rest of the wheel arch.
On the left hand side, I think it was two pieces. One piece towards the back of the van for the back half of the wheel arch and up to the window cill. One piece for the front for the wheel arch up to the window, including the cill.
I just used extra spray on glue, and a wallpaper seam roller to help with the seams, and they have stayed put for 2 years now.
Doing it again I would probably skip the flashband, because once the van is loaded with bedding & cupboards etc., its pretty quiet anyway. I remember when we started to sleep in the van, something was irritating my eyes and giving me headaches for the first few months. I'm convinced it was the bitumen in the flashband.
Good luck with the build and feel free to ask any questions.
